Mystery Wine Tasting Sessions with Annalise Demuth
Once or twice a quarter I'll be hosting a 'mystery' wine tasting session for my clients and friends, buy invitation only. The mystery part is I pick the wine maker based an interest in wine styles from other regions of the world. The wine maker and location will be disclosed shortly before the event but with enough time to plan. The sessions will almost always be in Sonoma County. These sessions are meant to be social, fun, relaxed events where we can catch up with each other and enjoy good wine.
As time has gone by, I've become really interested in non-california style wines and variatels (not chardonnay, pinot and cabs) as well as different regions around the world. It's not easy to explore that curiosity in Northern California, but there's enough to get started and a growing number of winemakers are branching away from Chard and Pinot. Beside pounding stakes and waxing wine bottles, I learned how to taste wine (see below) in my early years. I'd like to share that with you. Many of you know I'm a wine makers daughter (and sister). I spent my youth in Boonville, CA. not so willingly. To me it was torture, being 16 and driving for an hour (each way) to spend the day in the Mendocino heat - doing hard labor I might add! I learned how to pound stakes, use a theodolite, get poison oak terribly, label wine, market wine, box and deliver. You name it, I did it.
My dad, Chris Demuth, bought 'the ranch' on Deer Meadow Road in Boonville, CA in the 1970s just as the 'New California Wine Maker' invented their way of making wine and changing the course of California wine making. He became known, somewhat, to a niche group of wine peeps who valued small lot production, high quality fruit, and tasting the 'terroir'. The taste of Chris's fruit became known to many people in the industry. Once in while you might find a bottle of wine with Demuth Vineyards sourced fruit. Buy it if you do!
